This cover of "I Want To Be Your Man" was recorded as a part of an upcoming tribute I am doing for one of my biggest heroes, Roger Troutman. Roger's contributions to music through his band Zapp, and his solo career as a songwriter, live performer, and producer have placed him among the greats that inspired Roger. And just as George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and James Brown had done before, Roger pushed the boundaries of his craft both on the stage and in the studio, and continues to inspire countless artists. In addition to his unprecedented musical genius, Roger, and the entire Troutman family, have been responsible for an incredible amount of work in their community of Dayton, Ohio, through their own Troutman Enterprises. Through their work restoring and making available low-income housing, and many other community projects, Roger and his family have built a legacy that will transcend time, and keep the glow of love burning bright for years and years to come.
Roger's music, as well as his spirit, inspire me everyday. The tragic deaths of Roger and his brother, and best friend, Larry, have taken his music and his love away from us too soon, but we can keep his memory alive by continuing to remember all that he gave us. This is the first part of my tribute to the memory of such an iconic man. In addition to the synth & drum programming, and the guitar shredding, I also took up learning Roger's secret weapon; the Talkbox, an instrument which is much more difficult than it looks. A small amplifier with a tube that funnels the sound of your instrument, which you then craft using your mouth movements. So please note that there is no "auto-tune" or anything of that sort being used here. I only say this because I'm trying to save Rog some spinning in his grave about the whole auto-tune thing in general..
Presented here for the first time in an extended, digital, COMPUTER LOVE Valentine's Day remix, please enjoy my version of "I Want To Be Your Man". Dedicated to all the girls that make my heart beat a little faster. Infinite love xoxox
